Cuts and scrapes are a normal part of everyday life, but sometimes it’s hard to know when a wound needs more than basic first aid. While many minor cuts heal on their own, others may require stitches or professional wound care to reduce infection risk and support proper healing.
At Bluffside Urgent Care, we evaluate wounds carefully and help you understand whether stitches are the right next step.
When a Cut May Heal on Its Own
Small, shallow cuts that stop bleeding quickly and close easily may be treated at home with basic wound care. Gentle cleaning, protecting the area, and watching for signs of infection are often enough for minor injuries.
However, some wounds need medical attention to prevent complications.
Signs You May Need Stitches
Consider visiting urgent care if you notice:
A cut that continues bleeding after pressure is applied
Wounds that are deep or longer than expected
Edges that won’t stay closed
Cuts caused by sharp or dirty objects
Injury to the face, hands, or joints
Stitches help bring wound edges together, which may improve healing and reduce scarring.
Timing Matters
Many wounds need to be evaluated within a certain timeframe to determine whether stitches are appropriate. Waiting too long can make closure more difficult, which is why early assessment is often recommended when you’re unsure.
When to Go to the Emergency Department Instead
Some injuries require immediate emergency care. Go directly to the nearest emergency department or call 911 if you have:
Severe or uncontrolled bleeding
Deep wounds exposing muscle or bone
Numbness or inability to move the area
Large or gaping wounds from significant trauma
Your safety always comes first.
